The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Odisha has urged the Election Commission to take action against Congress candidate Ghasiram Majhi for allegedly hiding his criminal record in the affidavit submitted for the Nuapada Assembly by-election.
A delegation from the BJP, led by state vice president Jatin Mohanty, submitted a petition to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Odisha, stating that there are two cases registered against Majhi at the Nuapada police station, which he failed to disclose in his affidavit filed on October 18.
Attempts to reach Majhi for comments were unsuccessful. The BJP pointed out that Majhi had previously mentioned these two cases (numbers 146/2022 and 10/2018) during the 2024 general elections, where he was also a candidate. These cases are still pending in the Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate's court, yet he deliberately omitted them from his affidavit for the Nuapada by-election.
Mohanty stated, “This is an offense under Section 125-A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.” The BJP is demanding the rejection of Majhi's nomination and strict legal action against him.
